What is a capping machine?
A capping machine (or capper) applies and secures a closure onto a bottle, jar, or container – sealing the product to prevent leaks and contamination, preserve freshness, and, in many cases, provide tamper evidence. Depending on the closure, a used capper might thread a screw cap to a controlled torque, press on a snap cap, roll an aluminum shell into a pilfer-proof cap, crimp a crown or vial seal, or insert a cork. Consistent application torque is what makes the seal reliable: too loose and the container leaks, too tight and the cap or bottle can crack. Capping machines run across beverage, personal care, pharmaceutical, food, and household product lines, usually right after filling.
What types of used cappers does CWR carry?
Used capping machines are grouped mainly by how they apply the closure, how they’re configured, and how much they automate. Matching those to your closure and line is the key to buying the right machine:
- By capping method. Chuck cappers use a chuck that grips and torques the cap; spindle (or quill) cappers use pairs of spinning disks to tighten screw caps inline at speed; snap cappers press on push-down closures; ROPP cappers roll aluminum blanks into roll-on pilfer-proof caps; crimp cappers and crowners seal vials and crown-cap bottles; and corkers insert corks.
- By configuration. Inline (straight-line) cappers suit lower speeds and frequent changeovers, while rotary multi-head cappers deliver continuous high-speed output.
- By automation. Semi-automatic and tabletop cappers handle small batches and lab work; fully automatic inline and rotary cappers run inline with your filler. Related equipment like cap tighteners, retorquers, and cap elevators, sorters, and feeders often pairs with these machines.
Actual speed and container range depend on the machine’s configuration, closure type, and change parts.
Which capper brands does CWR stock?
We’ll take in virtually any quality capper relevant to beverage, personal care, pharmaceutical, food, and household production – so our inventory is always changing. Over the years that’s meant machines from the names buyers respect most, including:
- Elmar – roll-on and ROPP cappers known for clean, tamper-evident aluminum closures.
- Pack West – inline screw-on cappers valued for speed, accuracy, and quick changeover across bottle and cap sizes.
- Kaps-All – versatile inline spindle cappers and retorquers that are a workhorse across many industries.
- Zalkin – reliable rotary chuck and ROPP cappers built for demanding, high-volume lines.
- Resina – dependable screw cappers well suited to a wide range of containers and closures.
Because stock turns over constantly, the best way to find a specific brand or model is to check the inventory above or contact us. If we don’t have the right used capper for sale right now, there’s a good chance we can track it down.
How do you choose the right used capper?
Choosing a used capper comes down to matching a few things to your line: closure type, container size, speed, torque control, cap feeding, and condition. Here’s what to check before you buy:
- Closure type. Match the machine to your cap. A chuck or spindle capper handles screw caps; a ROPP capper rolls aluminum pilfer-proof closures; a crimp capper seals crowns and vials. The machine has to suit the closure you actually run.
- Container size range and change parts. Confirm the machine covers your bottle diameters, heights, and neck finishes, and check which change parts are included.
- Speed (bottles per minute). Match throughput to your filler and production goals so the capper isn’t a bottleneck – or overkill.
- Torque control and repeatability. For screw caps, consistent application torque is what keeps seals reliable. Look for adjustable clutches or torque monitoring.
- Cap feeding and sorting. Many cappers need a cap elevator, sorter, and chute to run automatically. Confirm those are included or compatible.
- Condition and intended use. Decide whether you need a production-ready machine or a parts/rebuild unit. We’ll be clear about where each machine stands.

Used capper FAQ
What’s the difference between a chuck capper and a spindle capper?
A chuck capper uses a chuck sized to your cap that descends, grips the closure, and applies a set torque – available as a single head or as a rotary machine with multiple heads. A spindle (or quill) capper uses pairs of angled spinning disks that tighten screw caps as bottles pass through inline. Chuck cappers give precise torque on a wide range of closures; spindle cappers are simple, fast, and easy to change over.
What cap types can a used capper handle?
It depends on the machine. Cappers are built for specific closure families – screw caps, snap or press-on caps, ROPP (roll-on pilfer-proof) aluminum caps, crimped crowns and vial seals, or corks. The important thing is to match the machine to the closure you run, since most cappers won’t cross between closure types without significant change parts or a different machine altogether.
What is a ROPP capper?
ROPP stands for Roll-On Pilfer-Proof. Instead of applying a pre-formed cap, a ROPP capper places a blank aluminum shell over the bottle and uses rollers to form the threads and a tamper-evident band directly onto the container. It’s common for spirits, wine, and pharmaceutical products where a tamper-evident aluminum closure is required.
How fast do used cappers run?
Speed is measured in bottles or containers per minute (bpm). Single-head chuck cappers often run up to roughly 50-90 bpm, while inline spindle and rotary multi-head cappers can reach several hundred bpm, depending on the cap, the container, and the application.
Can I buy a used capper for parts?
Yes. Alongside production-ready machines, we often carry older or non-running cappers that are ideal sources of change parts, chucks, clutches, and components – a cost-effective way to keep an existing machine running. Ask us what’s currently available for parts.
What condition are your used cappers in?
It varies by machine, and we’ll always tell you exactly what you’re getting. Some are production-ready and can be seen running; others are sold as-is or as parts and rebuild candidates. Our team personally evaluates equipment – often traveling to the seller’s location to assess a machine on-site – so you get a clear, informed read on condition before you buy.
Can you help match a capper to my line?
We’re glad to help you think through closure type, container sizes, speed matching, and torque so the machine fits the line you’re running. Give us a call and we’ll talk it through.
Do you sell used cappers nationwide?
Yes. With equipment stored across every region of the United States, we serve buyers nationwide, as well as in Canada and Mexico.
Get the closure right the first time
A capper only earns its keep when the seal is right – the correct closure, the correct torque, and a speed that keeps pace with your line. Tell us what you’re capping and we’ll help you weigh the options, whether that’s a quick spindle capper for screw caps or a rotary ROPP machine for tamper-evident aluminum. Browse the inventory above or reach out, and we’ll help you land on the right one.
