What is a can seamer?

A can seamer is a machine that hermetically seals a lid onto a filled can by forming a double seam – the airtight, leak-proof closure that protects a product’s freshness, flavor, and shelf life. The machine folds the can’s lid (or “end”) around the edge of the can body in two operations: the first roll curls the two layers of metal together, and the second roll tightens them into a compact, interlocked seam. That double seam is what makes a can safe to store for months or years, which is why seam integrity is tightly controlled in food and beverage production. The double-seaming process was pioneered and patented by the Angelus Can Machine Company more than a century ago, and it remains the industry standard today.

What types of used can seamers does CWR carry?

Used can seamer machines vary mainly by how they seal, how fast they run, and how much they automate. Matching those three things to your line is the key to buying the right machine:

  • By sealing method. Atmospheric seamers handle most beverages and many foods. Vacuum, steam, and gas-flush seamers (under-cover gassing or nitrogen dosing) remove or displace oxygen at the moment of sealing to protect oxygen-sensitive foods, coffees, and nutritional powders.
  • By seaming heads. Single-head machines typically run around 10-100 cans per minute (cpm), ideal for craft and low-volume lines. Four- and six-head rotary seamers can reach roughly 400-500 cpm for high-throughput production.
  • By automation. Semi-automatic seamers suit small-batch, lab, and pilot use. Fully automatic seamers run inline with your filler.

Actual speed and can range depend on the machine’s size, material, configuration, and change parts.

Which can seamer brands does CWR stock?

We’ll take in virtually any quality can seamer that’s relevant to food, beverage, and specialty canning production – so our inventory is always changing. Over the years that’s meant machines from the names buyers respect most, including:

  • Angelus – the industry benchmark, known for precise, repeatable seams and decades of reliable service; parts and change tooling are widely available.
  • Pneumatic Scale Angelus (PSA) – modern rotary seamers built for higher-speed beverage and food lines.
  • Canco / American Can Company – rugged single-head atmospheric and vacuum seamers that are a longtime workhorse for many operations.
  • Dixie – versatile seamers well suited to a range of can sizes, including vacuum applications.

Because stock turns over constantly, the best way to find a specific brand or model is to check the inventory above or contact us. If we don’t have it right now, there’s a good chance we can track it down.

How do you choose the right used can seamer?

Choosing a used can seamer comes down to matching a few things to your line: can size, speed, sealing method, condition, filler compatibility, and parts support. Here’s what to check before you buy:

  • Can size range and change parts. Seamers are set up for a specific can size (noted in the industry “diameter x height” format, e.g., 202 or 307). Confirm the machine covers your sizes and which change parts are included.
  • Speed (cans per minute). Match throughput to your filler and production goals so the seamer isn’t a bottleneck – or overkill.
  • Sealing method. Atmospheric suits most beverages; oxygen-sensitive products often need vacuum, steam, or gas-flush seaming.
  • Condition and intended use. Decide whether you need a production-ready machine or a parts/rebuild unit. We’ll be clear about where each machine stands.
  • Filler compatibility. If you’re pairing the seamer with an existing filler, the pitch needs to match – or the seamer can run as a stand-alone (random-infeed) machine.
  • Parts and support. Machines from well-supported brands like Angelus are far easier and more affordable to keep running for years.

Why buy your used can seamer from CWR Resources?

CWR Resources has bought and sold used packaging and processing equipment since 1997. What sets us apart is simple: we get eyes on the equipment before it reaches you. Our team travels directly to factory floors to evaluate machinery on-site, so we can give you an accurate read on a machine’s real condition – whether it’s ready to run or better suited for parts. Used can seamer FAQ

What’s the difference between an atmospheric and a vacuum can seamer?

An atmospheric can seamer seals under normal air conditions and is the most common choice for beverages and many foods. A vacuum (or steam / gas-flush) seamer removes or displaces oxygen at the moment of sealing, which helps preserve oxygen-sensitive foods, coffees, and other products that need a longer, more protected shelf life.

What can sizes can a used can seamer handle?

Most seamers can run a range of can sizes with the correct change parts, expressed in the industry’s diameter x height notation (for example, 202 to 404 diameter). Each machine is set up for one size at a time, so it’s important to confirm both the size range and which change parts are included.

How fast do used can seamers run?

Speed is measured in cans per minute (cpm). Single-head seamers typically run around 10-100 cpm, while four- and six-head rotary machines can reach roughly 400-500 cpm, depending on can size, material, and setup.

Can I buy a used can seamer for parts?

Yes. Alongside production-ready machines, we often carry older or non-running seamers that are ideal sources of change parts, seaming heads, and components – a cost-effective way to keep an existing Angelus or Canco running. Ask us what’s currently available for parts.

What condition are your used can seamers in?

It varies by machine, and we’ll always tell you exactly what you’re getting. Some are production-ready and can be seen running; others are sold as-is or as parts and rebuild candidates. Our founders personally evaluate equipment – often traveling to the seller’s location to assess a machine on-site – so you get a clear, informed read on condition before you buy.

Can you help match a seamer to my existing filler?

We’re glad to help you think through pitch compatibility, speed matching, and whether an inline or stand-alone (random-infeed) setup makes the most sense for your line. Give us a call and we’ll talk it through.

Do you sell used can seamers nationwide?

Yes. With equipment stored across every region of the United States, we serve buyers nationwide, as well as in Canada and Mexico.
