A Used Horizontal Form Fill Seal Machine from Southern Packaging
Southern Packaging has built horizontal form fill seal equipment for more than 55 years, and it now operates as a ProMach brand. The PowerPouch line is what Southern is known for, and this IM7 is the intermittent motion version of it, rated to 100 pouches per minute.
Intermittent motion is worth understanding before you buy. The film indexes forward, stops, and then the filling and sealing happen while everything sits still. Continuous motion machines run faster, but their tooling has to travel with the moving web. So an intermittent machine trades top speed for fill accuracy and cleaner seals. That is exactly the trade you want on powders and portioned product.
Pouch Sizes and What This Machine Runs
Pouch width runs from 2.25″ to 5.75″ and height from 2″ to 9.5″. That spans single-serve sachets through to larger retail pouches. So one machine can carry several SKUs without new tooling every time the package changes.
An adjustable forming plow handles that width range. The plow folds flat film into pouch shape before the side seals go on. Because this one adjusts, you move between widths by setting the plow rather than swapping it out. That is time you get back on every changeover. The machine measures 22′ long by 4′ wide by 100″ tall, so it wants a dedicated lane rather than a corner.
Auger Filling, Inline Metal Detection, and Controls
The machine is fitted with single auger fillers. An auger meters by volume through a rotating screw, which makes it the standard choice for powders and fine granular product: drink mixes, seasonings, protein blends, baking mixes, and the like.
Each filler carries a CEIA Model THS flow through metal detector, and the placement matters. It inspects product on its way into the pouch rather than after the pouch is sealed. So you reject contaminated product instead of finished packages. So you are not throwing away film, fill weight, and labor along with the reject.
Controls run on an Allen-Bradley SLC 5/04. The SLC 500 family is among the most widely installed control platforms in North American manufacturing. Its programming environment is therefore familiar to nearly every controls tech in the country. A vacuum pump is included with the machine.
