Shell and tube heat exchangers belong to a broad class of heat exchanger designs. They are the most common heat exchangers in oil refineries and other large chemical processes and are suited for high-pressure applications. Basically, the shell of a heat exchanger is filled with tubes, and fluid runs through the tubes, and another one flows over the tubes to transfer heat between them.
